Seagate Sorrows: Now Firmware Update Messes Up Hard Drives

SEAGATE SORROWS: NOW FIRMWARE UPDATE MESSES UP HARD DRIVES
It's a classic case of a solution causing a bigger problem than the original problem itself. After Monday's revelation of failing 1.5TB Barracuda drives, a number of users on the company's forum are now complaining that the new SD1A firmware update released by Seagate is responsible for 'bricking' the drives , in other words, making them non-functional.

CPU WARS: AMD SLASHES PHENOM II CPU PRICES
In an obvious reaction to Intel's price cut across its range of CPUs, including quad cores, AMD's brand new Phenom II CPUs saw price cuts today. The Phenom II 920 will now cost $195 (about Rs. 10,000) and the multiplier unlocked 3.0 GHz 940 Black Edition will be $235 (about Rs.11,750), taking Intel's moves head on.

The swearing in of U.S. President Barack Obama and the other presidential inauguration activities generated massive Web traffic, leading to site slowdowns but not to a general meltdown of the Internet. With widespread interest in the ceremonies and festivities, especially President Obama's oath of office and inaugural address, millions of people had been expected to tune in online, especially those without TV access while at work.

GOOGLE KILLS PRINT ADS PROGRAM
Google continues to trim off its underperforming services, this time cutting one that had been met with skepticism when it launched but nevertheless garnered some support. On Tuesday, the search giant announced it would close its Print Ads service. The program launched in 2006 and was met with raised eyebrows because it meant Google, an online specialist, would be venturing into print.

YOUTUBE LETS USERS DOWNLOAD CLIPS IN MPEG4
YouTube is offering users the chance to download clips as well as stream them from some of the channels on the Google video-sharing site. The first channel that is offering this service is President-elect Barack Obama's YouTube channel, ChangeDotGov. Visitors to the channel can simply use the 'click to download' link above the any video on the channel, to download the clip in high-quality MPEG4 format.
